Newspapers
Sometimes, the good old-fashioned apartment search can be your best bet. Get out your highlighter or red pen then turn to the classified section of one of New York’s famous papers. The New York Times, New York Post, Village Voice, New York Press, and New York Observer all have classified ads for rentals.
If you find something that sounds promising in the periodicals, call right away. There are thousands of other apartment seekers trolling for the best deals.
Websites
There are tons of websites for apartment seekers, which can be a great way to get current listings... or just to get an idea of what’s out there. Some websites also list sublets and temporary rentals. Here are a couple of popular choices:

Almost anyone looking to buy a home, condominium, or apartment is likely to work with a real estate agent. New York is one of the only cities in the world where renters routinely use brokers to find apartments.
A broker will help you located an apartment in a neighborhood where you’d like to live, for a fee – anywhere from one month’s rent to a percentage of the annual rent. If you are in a hurry, a broker can be a good option. Here’s a short list (there are many more!):
