New York Clerical Job Search—Do’s and Dont's

Today’s job market is definitely geared in favor of the employer. There are often hundreds of applicants for a single job opening, especially in New York for clerical jobs. A job applicant needs to be on top of their game to even be considered for, let alone land a premium clerical job in New York. There are several things a potential job candidate can do to increase their odds of being noticed and getting not only an opportunity to interview, but actually landing the job.
Here are some of the Do’s and Dont's in New York for landing a clerical job:

• Do enlist the help of a placement service or staffing agency. You need every advantage you can get in this market.
• Don’t mail out hundreds of resumes to companies all over New York. This impersonal tactic is not going to help you stand out and your resumes might as well end up as a liner for the boss’ hamster cage.
• Do show up five minutes early for your interview. Your potential employer wants to know you will show up on time for work and this is a good way to show it. Also, executives are busy and showing up a few minutes early might offer the opportunity for him/her to interview you when they have a break in their schedule for the day.
• Don’t ever, ever be late. If you are running late, you might as well call to cancel since. First impressions last a long time and this one will be difficult to overcome. In rare cases, when there has been an actual emergency you might get another chance, but don’t hold your breath. If you have a hundred people to choose from, would you choose someone who couldn’t show up on time?
• Do research the company and/or the industry before you arrive. The interviewer usually expects you to have some basic knowledge even for an informational interview. If you do not do your homework, you may find yourself having a difficult time answering the question, “Why do you want to work for this company?”
• Don’t bombard the interviewer with too many questions. You want to ask just enough questions to appear genuinely interested in the position and not enough to make yourself a nuisance.
